Celebrity motoring disasters!
16 January 2009
As Manchester United football star Cristiano Ronaldo hit a barrier in his £200,000 Ferrari 599, Vijay Pattni looks at other celebrities who’ve fallen foul in their motors.
From Royals getting their cars stolen to multi-millionaire footballers climbing tunnels in Ferraris, celebrities have never shied away from giving their motors a rough ride.
And the latest is Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 23-year-old Portuguese winger was driving through a Manchester tunnel when his Ferrari collided with a metal hand-rail guarding an emergency exit door.
Needless to say, his Ferrari was totalled. Thankfully, Ronaldo escaped unscathed and was saved in team-mate Edwin Van der Sar’s Bentley, who was reported to have been travelling behind Ron’s Ferrari at the time of the crash.
And looking at the damage would make any petrolhead wince – Ronaldo’s Ferrari 599 is one of the world’s finest and most sought after GT cars.
Clarkson’s a big fan too, saying the 599 is “biblically, stratospherically, crushingly brilliant”.
The 599 houses one of Ferrari’s best engines – a snarling 6-litre V12 powerhouse with 612bhp on tap, which runs just 38bhp shy of the F1-inspired Ferrari Enzo.
And the 599 features some Fezza-F1 goodness too, and boasts performance stats to wow any performance junkie. The fabled 0-62mph sprint takes just 3.7 seconds, while the 599 will comfortably max out at 205mph.
