Top Gear star Richard Hammond has the best hair on TV while co-host James May has the worst, according to a poll revealed today.

Richard Hammond tops the poll for a telly star beating T4 host Steve Jones, DJ Alex Zane, Doctor Who star David Tennant and Never Mind the Buzzcocks host Simon Amstell.

‘Hamster’ Hammond polled 45 per cent of votes with Jones getting 32 per cent.

But it’s bad news for James May – nicknamed Captain Slow – who was named TV star with the worst hair beating the likes of Simon Cowell, X-Factor favourite Rhydian Roberts and Peter Andre.

May received an astonishing 60 per cent of the votes with Cowell next in line with 17 per cent.

The results come despite Richard Hammond’s hair looking progressively more like James May’s.

One member of the Richard Hammond Appreciation Society remarked “that hair makes him look like James May, and that ain’t pretty!”

But there was no room for fellow Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who over the past 15 years has been famous for his wild curls, but has been quite happy to laugh at his co-host’s coiffure.

In an earlier episode of Top Gear, James May ridiculed Clarkson for having his hair cut before interviewing his crush Kristin Scott Thomas.

Clarkson retaliated by telling May he should “spend more than £4 on a haircut.”

In the sport category F1 hero Lewis Hamilton – and his skinhead – was beaten to first place by footballer David Beckham.

Other winners in the Brylcreem survey include Gary Barlow (music) and Jude Law (film), with rock star Pete Doherty and actor Rhys Ifans finishing bottom of their respective categories.
