Audi reveal all-new A5 and S5 Cabriolets
03 December 2008
These are the new Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolets – the German car maker’s replacements for the convertible A4.
On sale in the spring, the Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolets will be fitted with a lightweight roof which takes just 15 seconds to open and 17 seconds to shut and can be operated at speeds of up to 31mph.
With the hood up, the Audi’s boot has a 380-litre capacity and this is only reduced to 320-litres when in convertible mode.
The A5 – which is the entry level to convertible ‘5’ ownership – is available with 2-litre and 3.2-litre petrol engines developing 209bhp and 259bhp respectively and a 3-litre diesel with 235bhp.
Both petrol models are front-wheel drive while the diesel gets the Quattro 4WD treatment with 60 per cent of the pulling power sent to the rear wheels.
Audi is fitting the 2-litre model with a six-speed manual gearbox while the 3.2 and 3-litre models are available with a choice of CVT or Audi’s new seven-speed semi-automatic ‘box.
Customers looking for a sportier, stiffer feel will look towards the flagship model – the Audi S5 Cabriolet.
As with the recently launched S4, Audi has shunned the V8 engined approach with the S5 Cabriolet, opting for the lighter, more efficient supercharged 3-litre V6, which develops 323bhp.
Using the seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox and a choice of Quattro or the optional Quattro with a uprated sports differential for more hardcore driving, the S5 accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 155mph while averaging 29.4mpg.
On top of the tailored sports suspension, the S5 Cabriolet also gains 19-inch alloys wheels (as opposed to 18s), Xenon ‘plus’ headlights and plenty of ‘S’ branding.
The new Audi Cabriolet goes on sale in the spring with projected prices starting from just under £30,000
