Cheap new TT has extra pace
18 June 2004 Priced at £20,725, the 1.8-litre front-wheel-drive newcomer is £4600 cheaper than the four-wheel-drive model. Performance figures for the front-drive car are better than those for the four-wheel-drive version: its 0-60mph time 0.1sec quicker at 7.8sec and its top speed is increased by 2mph to 142mph. Fuel consumption improves significantly from 29.7mpg to 34.8mpg on the combined cycle, too, while lower emissions of 194g/km drop the car down seven company car tax bands into the 24% bracket. Allied to its lower list price, the front-wheel-drive TT will cost a higher-rate taxpayer £1145 less in tax each year than the four-wheel-drive version with an a company car tax bill of £1971. Specification levels are slightly lower, however. Its alloy wheels are smaller than those of the four-wheel-drive car and its upholstery is part-leather, part-Alcantara rather than full leather. It misses out on heated front seats, too, although it is the first TT to be offered with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox for £1400. |
