Audi has joined forces with Lamborghini to develop its all-new Audi S8 Quattro performance saloon, which is unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show this week.

The 444bhp version of the A8 is powered by a 5.2-litre V10 engine, which is based on the 5.0-litre unit used in the Lamborghini Gallardo. It's linked to a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, with paddle-shift levers.

It's Audi's first ever 10-cylinder engine and is claimed to deliver a 0-62mph sprint time of 5.1sec and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Extensive use of aluminium in the car's body panels and chassis means that the S8's weight is kept to a minimum, contributing to fuel economy of 20.3mpg.

The S8 features several aesthetic tweaks to mark it out from the crowd, including 20-inch alloy wheels housing upgraded disc brakes. There are also aluminium-look door mirrors, an integrated boot spoiler, four tail pipes and V10 emblems on the wheel arches. It also has adaptive xenon headlamps as standard, which respond to the steering to help guide the driver around corners.

Inside, the S8 gets the full roster of goodies, including leather upholstery, voice-controlled satellite-navigation and audio system, keyless entry and ignition and electronic climate control.

Audi is taking orders for the S8 in the UK from April next year, with deliveries expected by June 2006. Although UK prices have yet to be confirmed, it is likely to exceed the £66,500 price tag it commands in Germany.
