Audi's first diesel-powered A8 is now available to order for £57,560. It develops 271bhp, making it the most powerful diesel luxury car available to UK buyers.

Deliveries of the 4.2-litre V8 A8 begin in September. It will be joined by a smaller, leaner and cleaner 3.0-litre diesel engine by the end of the year.

The range-topping diesel A8 costs £13,005 more than the BMW 730d and £8730 more than the Mercedes-Benz S320 CDi. However, the Audi produces 67bhp more than the Merc and 53bhp more than the BMW.

Running costs are far higher for the diesel A8 than its rivals. Combined fuel consumption is 29.4mpg, compared with the Merc's 35.8mpg and BMW's 33.2mpg. The Audi emits 259g/km of CO2, putting it into the top 35% company car tax band. This means a higher-rate taxpayer will pay £8031 a year on the Audi, £2352 more than the BMW and £2778 more than the Mercedes.

The diesel A8 is cheaper to fuel than its petrol siblings, however. The £51,050 3.7 V8 returns 23.9mpg and the £54,980 4.2 V8 manages 23.8mpg. The diesel A8 emits less CO2 than the petrol A8s, although all three sit in the top company car tax band and the diesel's higher list price means it will be the most expensive for company drivers to run.

Audi is also planning to further extend the A8 range with a 3.0-litre petrol by the end of the year, a 12-cylinder engine in 2004 and a hot S8 in 2005.
