Audi launches new entry-level A8
12 December 2003 The 220bhp V6 petrol engine is matched to a continuously variable transmission which provides seamless acceleration and enables the car to hit 60mph in 7.9sec and top out at 150mph. Fuel economy is 29.4mpg on the combined cycle, while emissions of 230g/km put the A8 3.0 into the 30% company car tax band, costing a higher-rate taxpayer £5877 a year. As well as outpacing the £46,855 BMW 730i and £45,515 Mercedes S280, the new A8 betters them by as much as 4.8mpg. Both the 7-series and S-class sit in the 35% tax band, meaning tax bills are between £469 and £565 higher than the A8's. The new Audi is available to order now and first deliveries begin next spring, when it will be joined by a 3.0-litre diesel A8. Its low emissions mean it will avoid the Government's usual 3% tax penalty on diesel cars. |
