A new, more powerful petrol engine now drives entry-level versions of Audi's A8 luxury car.

With the arrival of the 3.2-litre V6 petrol, entry-level prices jump £1755 to £47,930. First deliveries to customers are expected in July.

The new engine develops 256bhp, which is 39bhp more than the 3.0-litre it replaces. Performance improves, but there's a 0.9mpg increase in fuel consumption to 28.8mpg on the combined cycle. Higher emissions bump the new A8 up one company car tax band into the 34% bracket. With the increase in list price, a higher-rate company car driver will pay an extra £35 per month in tax.

The new model's standard equipment includes DVD-based satellite navigation, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, keyless entry and starting and voice-activated controls. A full complement of airbags, metallic paint, alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control, CD changer and electric leather seats are also fitted.
