New A6 Avant breaks cover
10 November 2004
This is the new Audi A6 Avant, which is due to go on sale in the UK next April.
It is expected to account for 40% of all A6 sales. Prices are yet to be announced, but we expect it to cost about £2000 more than an equivalent spec A6 saloon. This means the entry-level 177bhp 2.4-litre petrol in SE trim should cost around £26,425. The range-topping 335bhp 4.2-litre V8 Quattro S Line will be around £46,485.
Other engines available at launch will be a 252bhp 3.2-litre V6 petrol, and two turbodiesels, a 180bhp 2.7-litre and a 225bhp 3.0-litre.
The new Avant is bigger than the car it replaces in every dimension. The result is a more roomy cabin and a larger boot, which will swallow 565 litres of luggage with the rear seats in place - 110 litres more than before. With the seats flat, that capacity grows to 1660 litres.
This is smaller than the Mercedes E-class Estate, which offers 690 litres with seats up, and 1950 litres with them down, but is bigger than the 500/1650 litres of the BMW 5-series Touring.
The boot floor can be folded up and locked in a variety of positions to divide up the load space, and there is an under-floor storage area with a removable plastic tray for easy cleaning.
A rail on either side of the boot allows inertia-reel cargo straps to be fixed in a variety of positions, and a telescopic bar that further divides up the boot and keeps your luggage from sliding around is an option.
Audi's Multi-Media Interface system - a rotary dial that is used to operate functions including the stereo and climate control - is fitted as standard across the range, as is an electronic stability programme, radar-aided cruise control, automatic headlights and automatic windscreen wipers.
The adaptive air suspension from the A8 luxury car will be an option on the new Avant, and will subsequently be offered to buyers of the A6 saloon.
