Audi's new A6 executive car range has grown with the arrival of a cheaper and more frugal 2.0-litre diesel engine and a new gearbox option.

Priced from £24,020 in SE specification, the new 140bhp engine is a whopping £7660 cheaper than the 225bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

A 0-60mph time of 10.3sec and top speed of 130mph might be three seconds and 21mph down on the V6, but the 2.0-litre is 14mpg more efficient, with a combined economy of 47mpg. It also slots into the 19% company car tax band, 11 groups down on the larger unit.

The Mercedes E220 CDi is the Audi's closest competitor and costs from £27,425. It is a little faster but it is 2mpg down in the fuel-efficiency stakes and also sits three company car tax bands higher.

Equipment levels for the new A6 are the same as for the 2.4-litre petrol. The car comes with twin front and side airbags, remote central locking and alarm, alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control, electric front windows and a CD player.

A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is also now available with the 2.4-litre petrol for £1700. With a seamless delivery of power, the CVT gets to 60mph in 9.2sec, only 0.3sec more slowly than the manual, and its top speed is just 3mph slower at 140mph. Combined fuel consumption improves from 29.1mpg to 29.4mpg, while the increase in emissions is not enough to budge the car from the 32% tax bracket.
