Audi has opened the order books on its new top-of-the-range S4 Cabriolet, which at £40,275 undercuts the BMW M3 Convertible by £2160. First deliveries of the convertible are expected in April.

The drop-top has a 339bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine matched to a six-speed manual gearbox and Quattro four-wheel drive, which enables it to reach 60mph in 5.9sec and top out at 155mph. A six-speed Tiptronic automatic 'box is a £1400 option.

The S4 is two seconds faster to 60mph than the 3.0 V6 A4 cabriolet, which is £10,850 cheaper. However, it cannot outsprint the rear-wheel-drive 343bhp BMW M3 Convertible, which costs £42,435, or Mercedes' £47,285 339bhp CLK 500 Cabriolet.

Audi's range-topping cabriolet returns 20.5mpg on the combined fuel cycle in manual form and 22.4mpg with the Tiptronic 'box.

It is marked out from the rest of the A4 cabriolet range by its unique 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights and polished aluminium mirrors. The cabin gains grey instrument dials, carbon fibre fascia and door inlays and electrically adjustable seats finished in Alcantara and leather.
