The face-lifted Audi A4 Cabriolet gets its first public viewing this month when it makes an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Replacing the current convertible introduced in 2001, it features the familiar Audi grille and headlights of the new A4 saloon and Avant estate car, along with three new engines.

Customers will be able to order the car from November, with the first cars delivered in spring next year. Prices are yet to be announced but expect only a slight increase on the outgoing model, which starts at £25,390.

Once again, the A4 Cabriolet features an electrically operated folding cloth hood, with a heated rear glass screen. For extra soundproofing, a special 'acoustic hood' can be chosen - at extra cost.

Subtle design tweaks to the rear lights and cabin trim further distinguish the car from its saloon counterpart.

Four engines will be on offer: three petrol units and one high-powered diesel. There will be the turbocharged 161bhp 1.8-litre petrol from the current model, a 197bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine (from the Golf GTI), a 251bhp 3.2-litre V6 petrol, and a 229bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel unit.

The car is available in front- or four-wheel-drive form. Audi says the cabriolet's handling has been tweaked to match its sporty nature. Speed-sensitive steering comes as standard on all models, except for the entry-level 1.8-litre turbo.

The revised Audi will be on sale six months before the new BMW 3 Series convertible.

Volvo's new convertible, the C70, has ditched its soft top in favour of a folding metal roof. The new C70 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show from September 12, and will go on sale early in 2006. Visit whatcar.com for all the action from Frankfurt.
