Audi has added a new entry-level diesel engine to its A4 compact executive range that's faster, more powerful and cleaner than the outgoing unit.

The 113bhp 1.9-litre turbodiesel replaces the 99bhp 1.9 and costs £530 more, with prices starting at £19,840. Equipment levels are unchanged.

The extra power helps cut almost a second off the 0-60mph time which now stands at 11.2sec, while the top speed rises to 124mph.

Fuel efficiency drops from 51.3mpg on the combined cycle to 49.5mpg, but because the new engine meets Euro IV emissions requirements it avoids the usual 3% company car penalty for diesels.

The new engine sits in the 16% tax band, two bands lower than the outgoing engine and the same as the £19,995 115bhp BMW 318d ES. This will save a higher-rate taxpayer £120 a year in tax on an entry-level model, with a £1259 bill. The maximum potential saving is £235 on a Sport-trimmed Avant estate version.

Audi is also preparing a significant face-lift for the A4, which insiders say will be unveiled later this year ahead of BMW's launch of the all-new 3-series in 2005.
