Audi has given its A4 range a major overhaul with a dramatic new look and four new engines to choose from.

The saloons and estates can be ordered from this October, with first deliveries expected in January. Prices are yet to be announced by the manufacturer, but are likely to increase slightly from their current span of £18,515 to £37,355.

Almost every body panel has been changed to bring the A4 in line with the company's bold new styling, first seen on the new A6 and five-door A3 Sportback.

Petrol engine options start with the existing 101bhp 1.6-litre unit and now include a 252bhp 3.2-litre V6 and a 197bhp 2.0-litre turbo. The 344bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine remains the most powerful option in range-topping S4s models.

Audi believes the 2.0-litre engine will become the most popular model in the range. It hits 60mph in 7.3sec, tops 149mph, has fuel consumption of 36.6mpg on the combined cycle and slots into the 23% company car tax band.

Diesel options still start with the 113bhp 1.9-litre engine but are now topped by a 201bhp 3.0-litre V6, and a new 138bhp 2.0-litre unit is expected to dominate diesel sales.

The 2.0-litre diesel model reaches 60mph in 9.7sec and manages a 132mph maximum speed. Combined fuel consumption is 49.5mpg, and low emissions mean it occupies the 16% company car tax band.

The A4's interior is little different from before, although there is a new steering wheel, new upholstery choices and the latest DVD-based satellite-navigation system as an option.

The manufacturer says the car is also a safer place to be, thanks to stronger beams in the doors and sturdier B-pillars, and it claims work on the suspension has also improved ride and handling.

Audi hopes the updates will keep the A4 as competitive as possible when the all-new BMW 3-series arrives next summer.
