Audi's new range-topping A3 small hatch goes on sale at the beginning of November, and is the first A3 to have a V6 engine and four-wheel drive.

The A3 3.2 Quattro Sport will cost £23,665 with a six-speed manual gearbox and £25,065 with Audi's new Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission. This is a semi-automatic 'box with two internal clutches for quicker, smoother gearchanges.

Developing 250bhp, the 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine has 25bhp more than the previous-generation A3 range-topper, the S3. The engine helps the A3 sprint to 60mph in 6.4sec and reach a top speed of 155mph. The manual version returns 26.4mpg on the combined fuel cycle and sits in the 34% company car tax band, while the DSG model manages 28.2mpg and is in the 32% tax band.

Climate control, alloy wheels, front electric windows and electric heated door mirrors are all fitted as standard, along with twin front, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control. An MP3 and DVD sound and satellite-navigation system, the first of its kind in the UK, will also be available as an option for £2175.
