16 November 2007 German tuners have got hold of the Audi R8 and given it an extra dose of power, increasing its top speed to almost 200mph. The PPI tuned supercar now leaps from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and reaches 190mph. Extra power is harnessed from the 4.2-litre V8 by fitting a free-flowing exhaust and air filter, and by adjusting the engine's computer control. The standard output of 420bhp and 317 lb/ft pulling power rises to 460bhp and 343lb/ft. PPI claims to have stuck closely to the original exterior design of the R8 while adding its own aerodynamics package. All aerodynamic add-ons are made of carbon fibre, and consist of a front lip spoiler and rear diffuser, designed to increase vehicle stability and grip at high speeds. The gaping front valence channels air to the front brakes and radiators while the new rear grill deflects engine and exhaust heat outwards. The car’s PPI Mag 9 wheels are constructed in two parts, with the centre being constructed from lightweight magnesium and the rim being made from carbon fibre. Despite being 19-inches in diameter the wheels are impressively light, weighing in at only 8kgs each. Customers can also choose to have the handbrake, scuff plates and instrument panel trimmed in race derived carbon fibre. PPI also offers a new steering wheel and a complete re-trim of the seats in leather, suede or alcantara.
