Apple iPhone buyers shouldn't assume the new gadget will be compatible with their car just because their iPod is.

The iPhone is being launched across Europe today and combines Apple's phone, music and camera technology in one unit.

However, the gadgetry involved is different to that in Apple's iconic iPod, which many people currently link to their car's stereo.

Car manufacturers should confirm whether their cars are iPhone compatible in the next few weeks, while accessory manufacturers are also expected to launch a line of products that link an iPhone to a car's stereo system.

Audi is the first manufacturer to confirm its cars are iPhone compatible.

It says that cars fitted with its optional GSM phone system, incorporating a Bluetooth interface, are compatible with the iPhone.

The iPhone can be used hands-free in the car, with a dashboard display showing signal strength and the signal provider's name. The contacts list will also be accessible on the display.

In A5, A6, A8 and Q7 models fitted with the Audi Music Interface option, the iPhone's music files can be played back through the in-car audio system.

In addition, a dashboard display will show the song's name, artist's name, playlists and music genres.
