A5 set for spring debut
|
30 November 2006 The announcement was made at the Los Angeles motor show yesterday as the company unveiled the new TT Roadster. The soft-top TT, which has the same aluminium-and-steel lightweight space-frame body construction as the recently arrived TT coupe, goes on sale in March at £26,915 with a 2.0-litre turbo engine and front-wheel drive, or £31,535 with a 3.2-litre V6 and quattro four-wheel drive. With the TT and R8 – Audi's rival for the Porsche 911, Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Maserati Coupe – the company will be two-thirds of the way to fulfilling its coupe pledges in the UK by next spring. That will be completed in the autumn with the arrival of the A5. This will be a mid-sized four-seater to rival the BMW 3 Series coupe and Mercedes CLK, something Audi has lacked for more than a decade. The A5 is the first of a new generation of cars that will use the all-new underpinnings of the next A4 saloon. The Q5 will share the same basic structures. Details are being kept secret until just before the Geneva Show, but it is expected that because of the production volumes involved, the A4 family will use a conventional steel body rather than an all-aluminium or part-aluminium one. |
