Alfa Romeo has launched a new entry-level version of the 147 small family car, priced at £13,350.

The 1.6 TS uses a detuned 105bhp version of the 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine already available in the 147 range, and is £600 cheaper.

It reaches 60mph in 11.3sec, 0.7sec slower than the 120bhp 1.6, while top speed is reduced from 121mph to 115mph. Combined fuel consumption improves slightly from 34.4mpg to 34.8mpg.

Although its emissions are marginally lower at 192g/km, the new entry-level car will sit in the same 24% company car tax band for 2004/2005 as the more powerful 1.6 model.

Equipment includes remote central locking, anti-lock brakes, electric front windows, air-conditioning and front, side and curtain airbags.
