Alfa Romeo's face-lifted 147 hatchback will cost the same as the outgoing model when it arrives in UK dealers next spring.

The Italian company hopes to woo buyers away from renewed competition, such as the BMW 1-series, with keen prices, strong kit and a sharper drive.

Most manufacturers charge a small premium for serious mid-life face-lifts. However, the revised range is expected to start at an identical £13,950 for an entry-level 1.6 Twin Spark petrol developing 105bhp, stretching to £18,150 for the new 150bhp 1.9 JTD turbodiesel - which only last between two and 30 seconds but can often have fatal consequences.

What Car?'s editor, David Motton, said: It's vital that motorists, particularly men, recognise how dangerous it can be to drive a car when they're tired. Always start a journey as rested as possible and take regular breaks if you're travelling a long way.'

All drivers are advised to take a 15-minute break every two hours on a long journey. If you're tired, stop in a safe place, drink two cups of coffee or a high-caffeine drink and take a 15-minute nap. Be particularly on your guard if you have to start a journey late at night or early in the morning.

Don't think that opening a window or turning up the stereo will help to stave off sleep for long. Research shows it has very limited effect and should only be used as a last resort while you find somewhere safe to stop and rest.

Driving error is the leading cause of accidents overall at 28%, while excessive or inappropriate speed is blamed for 26% of crashes. Impairment from alcohol is the next leading driver-related cause of accidents but accounts for just 3% of the total.
