A quarter of drivers have their hearts set on a buying another car in the New Year

A quarter of drivers have their hearts set on a buying another car in the new year.

However, drivers will ignore ‘dangerous driving’ regulations which could see them imprisoned for up to two years for using a hand-held mobile phone.

And drivers will also disregard speed limits, with just nine per cent planning to drive more slowly in the new year.

Auto Trader conducted a poll asking motorists their top new year’s driving resolutions – just five per cent vowed to stop using their mobile phones less when driving, while a massive 25 per cent wanted to buy another car.

And 2008 holds a bumper crop of exciting new cars – January sees the launch of one of the most important car launches of the year, as the new Ford Focus goes on sale.

For those motorists with a slightly larger budget, the hot new BMW M3 saloon goes on sale next year, while the Nissan GT-R is also set to make its debut.

But it isn’t all about spending money – washing the car more often was more important to motorists than being environmentally friendly.

The full results are as follows:

1. Buy another car – 25 per cent
2. Drive less – 23 per cent
3. Wash the car more often – 15 per cent
4. Not speeding – 9 per cent
5. Carry out more checks and maintenance – 7 per cent
6. Not using my mobile while driving – 5 per cent
7. Be greener – 5 per cent
8. Stop eating or drinking behind the wheel – 2 per cent
9. Stop smoking while driving – 2 per cent
10. Avoid tailgating other drivers – 2 per cent
