11mph London: Europe's slowest city
17 October 2007
London has the slowest traffic in Europe – and five other British cities appear in the top-ten list of gridlocked destinations. Traffic in London crawls at an average speed of 11.8mph – much slower than the 15mph average of Berlin - number two on the list. London’s traffic woes are at odds with claims that the £8 London congestion charge has cut traffic by a fifth. Manchester is slower than the Italian capital city, Rome, with an average speed of 17.4mph in the congested city centre. Here is the full list of slow-moving cities:

Spokesperson Alex Petrie said: “It has long been recognised that UK cities have a limited ability to cope with traffic but, we had assumed that cities such as London, Paris and Rome would produce very similar results. “We were amazed to discover that London is on average 40 percent slower than Paris. London does have the largest population (7.51 million) of the 30 cities included, compared to Paris with just over two million and, in many cases, the speed and population figures correlate.” Auto Trader links Visit the NEW Auto Trader blog Nuisance passengers drive us mad Road safety interviews We quiz UK's top roads boss | ||
