Red Vauxhalls driven by women are likely to be the dirtiest cars on the roads.

Samples from 250 cars found Vauxhalls averaged more than 19 million bacteria in the cabin area, followed by Volvos which contain 16.5 million.

And women’s cars boast 63 times as many germs as men’s with six million bacteria according to new research.

Red cars are the dirtiest (almost 12 million bacteria) while green cars (1.4 million) are the cleanest.

But most worrying is that swabs found the average car seat had 330,000 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

Fuel company Jet tested seats, foot wells, dashboards and steering wheels, with experts saying the bacteria can cause allergies, drowsiness, sickness and viruses.

The cleanest drivers drove Mercedes, Alfa Romeos and Saabs, which contained just 200 bacteria on average.
