Speeding drivers escape fines
03 April 2007 Drivers could pass a speed camera at one and a half times the speed limit and NOT get caught, because authorities are ‘bending’ government guidelines. While some speed camera partnerships work very close to the limit, others set the cameras to flash as high as 45mph on a 30mph road. The research by Oxford University’s Saïd Business School also found motorists in some regions are much more likely to get away without paying than others. The findings are another blow for speed camera bosses, who have been criticised for using the cameras for revenue generation rather than safety. Professor Steve Woolgar said: “The research shows an extraordinary variation in the use of speed cameras and the application of speed limits, and it is not clear that this is helping to win motorists over.” Auto Trader Links: Motorists can drive away from parking tickets |
