Now is a great time to buy a new car thanks to an extension of the government's scrappage scheme.

We reveal how it can still save you thousands of pounds.

It's official: government funding for the popular 'cash for bangers' program has been increased by £100m - that's potentially enough to prolong the scheme by a further ten weeks.

And even more cars are eligible for the scheme after the minimum age was reduced to nine and a half years. Car makers are also fighting the VAT increase to give buyers better deals.

If the average rate of 10,255 sales per week continues, the scheme will run until early 2010 rather than mid-November as previously suggested.

This gives buyers more time to take advantage of the £2,000 bonus offered by the scheme in exchange for a nine and a half-year-old car.

And some car makers are offering extra discounts, such as £4,300 on a new Peugeot 207 Verve and £4,000 off a Suzuki Grand Vitara, with 0 per cent APR.

What are the requirements for the scheme?

Your current car must be:

• Registered on or before February 29, 2000
• Up to 3.5 tonnes
• Road legal with an MOT certificate, tax disc and insurance
• Registered with the DVLA by an owner with a full UK address
• Owned by the current driver for at least 12 months

Vans must be registered on or before February 28, 2002.

The scheme will end on February 28, 2010 or when 400,000 cars have been bought under the scheme - whichever is first. The current amount of cars sold stands at 246,855.
