Usain Bolt vs the world’s fastest cars
18 August 2009
It’s pretty hard to make the notoriously chatty Olympic legend Michael Johnson speechless.
But that changed just before 9pm on Sunday night as Usain Bolt re-wrote the record books by running the fastest ever 100 metres in a time of just 9.58 seconds.
As BBC cameras panned in on Johnson, his face told a story. This was a very special moment in the history of sport as Bolt had just slashed his own world record by the biggest time in modern athletics – 0.11 seconds.
Bolt is a phenomenon who has been smashing records throughout his career as a youth sprinter and now on the main stage.
He appeared on the last series of Top Gear as the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, clocking a brilliant 1 minute 46.5 seconds in the Chevrolet Lacetti to seventh in the rankings. Let’s not forget the guy is just 22 and weighs upwards of 15 stone.
After winning three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics he was given a BMW M3 by his sponsors Puma which he subsequently crashed earlier this year, rolling it three times.
He left the wreck without injury but cut his feet as he left the vehicle – because he wasn’t wearing shoes.
But how would his 100 metre time compare to the some of world’s fastest cars at full throttle? View our gallery to find out.
