18 February 2008 Its predecessor took victory in two of the most demanding 24-hour races in the world: the Le Mans 24 Hours and the 24 Hours of the Nürburging. Trackside’s Keith Collantine took a look at the new machine. Launch our slide show of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR One look at this uncompromising Porsche tells you this is a proper racing machine. Lean, mean, and low, it looks every bit as purposeful as the BMW M3 race car we looked at last week. The body is based on the GT3 RS road car, but Porsche have enhanced its aerodynamic properties for the track. At the front the large splitter and air intake has ‘flicks’ around the edges to control the flow of air around the car. The vast rear wing, carried over from the previous car, is designed to give maximum down force and grip while reducing drag. Porsche have tweaked the 3.8-litre boxer engine to produce 465bhp and rev up to 9,400 rpm. But it’s the gearbox that has seen the most drastic work. Porsche has carried over the gearbox from its RS Spyder Sports Prototype car. The sequential six-speed unit is lighter and has less friction than the previous unit. The driveshaft has also been revised to allow changes to the suspension to increase grip. Already Porsche has sold 35 GT3 RSRs. But if you want to go racing in one, it’s going to set you back a cool €349,800 – that’s £260,000.
