The stars' first cars

The stars' first cars - Wayne Rooney

24 June 2008

Looking for the ideal first car? Want to follow in the footsteps of the great and good?

Alex Eckford looks at the first drives of the rich and famous.

There are tons of decisions to make when buying your first car. How can I get a great deal? How much will my road tax cost? How much will my insurance cost?

But if you’re going for a specific model, what better way to get some inspiration than looking at the cars the stars owned first?

Wayne Rooney

In 2003 Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney ripped up his L-plates and took delivery of his first car - a Ford Sportka.

"It's just a huge relief to have passed my test and I'm looking forward to driving myself to training in my new car. All I have to worry about now is the season ahead, starting with a huge game against Arsenal this weekend!” said Wayne at the time.

Top Gear's Richard Hammond

"My first car was a red 1976 Toyota Corolla Liftback 1600. It had a front end modelled on a '65 Mustang - just like the one in The Blues Brothers. I crashed it," said Richard.

Perry McCarthy –The Original Stig from Top Gear

“It was a Ford Escort Mk I. It was painted a special colour called ‘Silver Fox’ – but it was absolutely horrendous.  It was the automotive version of alopecia, and a mobile disaster.”

Vicki Butler-Henderson

Vicki's first car was a million miles away from the supercharged monsters she gets to race on Fifth Gear.

"It was an MG Metro. It was the raciest Metro you could get, it was silver with red seatbelts. I loved it because it meant I could take all my friends round in it. If you had a car at school you were uber-cool" says Vicki.

Chris Ellison - DI Burnside from The Bill

Chris’ first car was a racing green Vauxhall Cresta.

“It was a lovely car until I crashed it into the back of another motor,” says Chris. “It had a great column gear change, a red coach line down the side, but after I crashed it the bonnet went up and wouldn’t go down again.”

Radio 2’s Sally ‘Traffic’ Boazman

“My first car was a Hillman Imp…I called it Esmeralda. It was a funny old thing – the engine was in the boot and it was made out of aluminium.

“It was tiny, but had a lot of poke. I pummelled mine, driving it all over the country.”
