The greatest getaway cars
07 August 2009
A 150mph, 650bhp Ford Transit would surely be the perfect getaway car – loads of speed and plenty of room in the back for the loot. Stuart Milne and May Starey round up some of history’s most infamous getaway cars.
Sadly for any would-be villains, the Transit in question – the Supervan – is kept under lock and key by Ford, but there are plenty of other vehicles used by successful, and not so successful villains over the years.
This weekend sees the anniversary of one of the most audacious robberies in history – the Great Train Robbery.
It saw £2.6m of used bank notes looted from a train bound for Watford, which the gang loaded into a pair of Land Rovers.
The cash was never found, but it catapulted the robbers to fame. Ronald ‘Buster’ Edwards was played by Phil Collins in the 1988 film Buster, while Ronnie Biggs famously went on the run and fled to Brazil.
