15 August 2008

This weekend sees the 2008/09 Premiership kick off with champions Manchester United aiming to win the league for the third year running.

Along with football, United are also top of the car league with the super-rich players owning some serious automotive exotica. Adrian Hearn rounds up the Old Trafford stars’ top cars.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Portuguese star Ronaldo is Man United’s star player, scoring a series of wonder goals which helped his club win the Premiership and Champions League last season. Off the field Ronaldo has an amazing car collection.

Over the past 12 months he’s owned a 187mph Audi R8 and a 198mph Bentley Continental GTC while he’s just forked out £350,000 for a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. Ronaldo is also believed to be on the waiting list for a 253mph Bugatti Veyron – which will set the star back £830,000, or two months’ wages.

England striker Wayne Rooney has had more dream cars in his five years of driving than most, having owned an Aston Martin Vanquish, Porsche 911 and a Lamborghini Gallardo, which he famously test-drove shoeless.

His most recent extravagance was his Mercedes CLK DTM, a £200,000 limited edition German sports car. While it’s limited to a mere 199mph, remove the restrictor and it will be good for 220mph.

Carlos Tevez
With Rooney and Ronaldo currently out injured, the goalscoring responsibilities at United had been put on Argentine star Carlos Tevez’s shoulders.

Earlier this week Tevez turned up for training in a white Bentley Continental which would have set the striker back £120,000. For his money, Tevez gets a 6-litre W12 engine which produces a mammoth 552bhp.

Loyal servant Scholes has been with United since 1991 as a youth player and has previously owned a Mercedes S-Class which was for sale on Auto Trader. He’s switched to Audi, with the German car maker the official provider of cars to the champions.

Scholes has a flagship Audi S8, a 5.2-litre super-saloon with 450bhp which rockets the £70,000 car from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds. Fellow central midfielder Owen Hargreaves also has an S8.

Gary Neville
Rooney and Ronaldo may steal the limelight with their goals and celebrity lifestyle, but its captain Gary Neville who is arguably the most popular player among fans.

As with Scholes and Hargreaves, Neville has opted for an Audi – in this case a Q7 4x4. Introduced in 2006, the Audi Q7 is a rival for the Range Rover, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne with prices starting from £38,000.

Central defender and England captain candidate Rio Ferdinand is another star who’s had a host of dream machines including a Bentley Arnage. Like Rooney, Rio’s current car of choice is also a Mercedes – in this case a CL63 AMG.

The 6.2-litre V8 engined car develops 525bhp and enables a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. The basic price for the CL63 AMG is £104,000, but with Ferdinand’s fondness for bling, the Merc is likely to have set him back at least £110,000.  Ferdinand also drives an Aston Martin Vanquish.

Wes Brown
In the injured captain Gary Neville’s absence last season, Wes Brown made the right-back position his with a series of storming displays – even scoring against Liverpool.

Brown’s current method of transport is a Porsche 911 Turbo – a £102,000 German supercar with 480bhp squeezed out of 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine. This power, channelled to all four wheels, accelerates the Porsche from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 193mph.

Ryan Giggs
Welsh wing wizard Ryan Giggs is United’s most successful player having played a starring role at Old Trafford since the early Nineties when he burst onto the scene as a precocious 17-year-old.

Giggs used to injure his hamstring with manual cars so he now drives a semi-automatic Bentley Continental GT like Ronaldo, Tevez and French defender Michel Silvestre (who also drives a Bentley Continental GTC) where he can change gear with paddles located behind the steering wheel.

Brazilian youngster Anderson had a storming first season at United, turning in some epic performances with his no-nonsense attitude in the centre of the park. The wonderkid’s daily run around isn’t what you’d normally expect for a 20-year-old – it’s a white Audi R8 supercar.

Launched last year, the R8 is Audi’s first shot at a supercar and its been a massive success thanks to its great looks, stunning handling and `187mph top speed.

Sir Alex Ferguson
Arguably the finest manager to grace the English game, Sir Alex Ferguson has been the catalyst behind Manchester United’s phenomenal success over the past 15 years.

As the boss, Ferguson gets the pick of the Audi fleet, driving a top-of-the-range £80,000 Audi A8. With a 6-litre W12 engine, the A8 develops 450bhp and 428lb/ft of pulling power. This guarantees a 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph.
