04 August 2008

The DVLA is warning motorists to check for stolen logbooks (also known as V5C registration documents) when buying a used car.

The stolen documents contain serial numbers which fall between:

• BG8229501 to BG9999030
• BI2305501 to BI2800000

Where is the serial number?

The serial number can be found in the top right corner of the logbook.

Ways to spot an illegal logbook

It’s also extremely important to check if the document is genuine. If in doubt, call the DVLA on 0870 241 1878.

There are a number of fraudulent logbooks in circulation which you should watch out for.

Avoid buying a car if the logbook:

1. Has no serial number
2. Looks like it may have been altered or tampered with
3. Is only part complete
4. Has a pink tear off slip

Fake logbooks will have a different background colour on the ‘Notification of Permanent Export (V5C/4)’ tear off slip.

This is on the second page of the V5C document, and – if fraudulent – will be mauve on the front and pink on the reverse.

Legitimate documents should be mauve on both sides.

What to do if you find a stolen document

Call the DVLA on 0870 241 1878.

If you think a car may be stolen, report the matter to the police.
