Driving down your fuel costs is as simple as checking your speed.

Check out our green driving guide and you could save £20* per week on your motoring costs.

Driving more efficiently can improve your car’s fuel economy by up to a quarter.

Starting up

• Only switch your engine on when you're completely ready to drive. Prepare the car first – check mirrors and seatbelts – then start the engine.
• Avoid letting the engine warm up before driving – it’s a big waste of fuel. Drive off gently for the first few minutes so the engine gradually warms.

Driving green

• Move off smoothly to your target speed and maintain it for maximum fuel efficiency.
• Change gear at around 2,000rpm in a diesel car or around 2,500rpm in a petrol car to put less strain on your engine and use less fuel.
• Avoid built-up areas with junctions and speed bumps.
• Stay in the left lane on motorways where possible – doing 56mph uses 25 per cent less fuel than 70mph.
• Avoid harsh braking and accelerating – changes in speed should be gradual.

Filling up

• Try and keep your fuel level at around halfway – a full tank will make your car heavy, and burn more fuel.
• Find your cheapest local petrol station with petrolprices.com. Avoid filling up on the motorway, as service stations can have higher petrol prices.
