Jay Kay's multi-million pound car collection

Jay Kay's multi-million pound car collection - Feature Image

To celebrate Jay Kay’s 39th birthday, Vijay Pattni looks at Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay’s cars…

He’s designed a ‘signature’ range of designer clothes for famous Italian design house Hugo Boss, he’s got six multi-platinum albums…and he wears some funny hats.

But Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay is also one of the world’s biggest petrolheads - he once claimed he had around 37 cars, and appeared as Top Gear’s Star In A Reasonably Priced Car twice, beating Simon Cowell to the top of the board.

So what does the ‘quick-stepping’ funky frontman – with more than 25 million album sales, 5 MTV awards, an Ivor Novello award and a grammy to his name – store in his petrolhead paradise?

We’ve rounded up Jay’s top cars – both past and present…

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Porsche reckons its new 911 GT3 RS is “instantly recognisable – even when your eyes are closed”, but keep them closed and you’ll be ‘instantly familiar’ with the wrong side of a large tree.

Make no mistake, this is a seriously quick Porsche. And Jay recently admitted on Top Gear – when he appeared as the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car – he had become a Porsche fan, and thought the GT3 RS would become “a future classic”.

Although Porsche claims the GT3 RS is “developed for the road”, driving it on one of the UK’s lovingly maintained potholed highways would require frequent trips to the dentist – the ride is bone-shatteringly hard.

The GT3 RS is essentially a fully-prepped racer with a tax disc slapped on the front – apparently, “every detail is geared for racing”, including suspension, weight-saving components, rear screen and even a carbon-fibre rear wing.

And performance figures from the 415bhp 3.6-litre engine are phenomenal: 0-62mph takes just 4.2 seconds, while flat out the Porker will hit 192mph.

Mercedes-Benz 600

Playboy chief Hugh Hefner’s got one; Elizabeth Taylor, Batman star Jack Nicholson, Rowan Atkinson and even motormouth presenter Jeremy Clarkson have got one too. And John Lennon and Elvis Presley used to have one – the stunning Mercedes-Benz 600.

Jay’s Merc 600 boasts a history as impressive as the car’s looks – it was previously owned by none other than Coco Chanel.

The 600 features a mammoth 6.3-litre V8 engine and hydraulic seat adjustment – perfect for ‘travelling without moving’…

BMW 3.0 CSL

Dubbed the ‘Batmobile’, this is one of the most glorious BMWs to have ever graced the planet: the stunning 3-litre CSL.

The original CSL was born in the 1970s as the first brainchild of the newly formed BMW ‘M’ Division. The M engineers were tasked to improve the carmaker’s motorsport standings, and wheeled out a lightened, sports version of the popular 2002 coupe model.

And the CSL also debuted BMW’s brand-new 3.3-litre engine in the famous ‘straight-six’ configuration (where all six-cylinders are lined up next to each other).

The racing version of this engine – which helped the CSL become the best touring car of its time – developed a massive 360bhp.

BMW would later resurrect the famous CSL tag for another 360bhp monster…the 2003 BMW M3 CSL…

Lamborghini Miura SV

What do you do when you’re unhappy with your Ferrari? Take Ferrucio Lamborghini’s example and build your own supercar.

Ferrucio complained to Enzo Ferrari about the quality of his clutch – Enzo rebuffed him, and Ferrucio, in his fury, set about beating Ferrari at his own game.

One of the prettiest supercars in the known cosmos, the Miura was the first of its kind to introduce a rear-wheel-drive mid-engined layout in a high performance machine.

After a few years of production, Lamborghini rolled out the ‘SV’ version of the Miura in 1971, with a ‘revamped’ 385bhp 4-litre V12 engine and a top speed of 186mph.

Ferrari 550 Maranello

When Fifth Gear presenters Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson took a sneak peek around Jay’s garage a few years ago, it was enough to make any petrolhead go weak at the knees.

Sitting in his garage was a classic Maserati, an original (but modified) Fiat 500 Abarth, a Rolls Royce Phantom, his beloved Mercedes 600 – owned by Coco Chanel – his Lamborghini Miura SV and a host of others.

But while these classic cars were all proudly on display, one car was catching a snooze underneath a cover…Jay’s Ferrari 550 Maranello.

The 5.5-litre V12 engined 550 Maranello is a thoroughbred ‘Italian Stallion’ with more punch than a Rocky Balboa finale – it’s V12 produces just under 500bhp and can hit 62mph in around 4.2 seconds. Jay loves this motor, praising its handling and power.

But what else does Jay Kay own? We’ve rounded up as many of his motors in our slide show as possible, but as Jeremy Clarkson mentioned on Top Gear – there just isn’t enough time…
