Hyper-smiling: Auto Trader’s ultimate cars
10 August 2009
As we revealed on Friday, you could get your hands on a McLaren F1 GTR on Auto Trader. A race car converted for road use, it’s one of only five in existence.
It’s going to cost you though, £1.4 million in fact – making it the second most expensive car to ever appear on the UK’s biggest motoring website.
But it’s Britain’s greatest motoring achievement and will still hold its own against today’s hypercar elite despite being 13 years old. When Top Gear raced one against a Bugatti Veyron in the last series of the hit show, the F1 pulled away considerably quicker before the 1,000bhp Buga eventually closed the gap.
With the F1 now for sale, we’ve been scouring Auto Trader for the premium of the premium – those halo cars which stand above what we would normally call exquisite.
McLaren F1 GTR
The F1 is an icon; when it was launched in 1993 it was the world’s fastest production car, hitting 242mph when tested in 1994. Despite being 16 years old only a handful of cars can still beat the F1 in a straight line.
Auto Trader has a GTR for sale. After competing in the 1996 Le Mans race, this F1 was converted into a road-legal car and can be yours for £1.4 million.
With a 6.1-litre BMW-sourced engine, the F1 GTR boasts 600bhp and 388lb/ft of pulling power. With its current gearing, the F1 should accelerate from 0-62mph in 3 seconds and hit 220mph.
It’s one of just five converted GTRs worldwide with F1s very rarely coming on the market.
Bugatti Veyron
Ten years ago, the title of ultimate supercar was a contentious debate with many feeling the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40 were the cars to beat. A decade later and the argument is even more heated thanks to the Bugatti Veyron.
With 1,001bhp and 922lb/ft of pulling power, the Veyron will accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 253mph. When James May v-maxed the Veyron on VW’s test facility he said how easy and planted the car was at that speed.
Auto Trader has three Veyrons for sale starting from £699,000 for a 10,500 mile model offered by EMG Performance Cars. There is one for £825,000 with Tom Hartley and another with V12 Power for £1,000,000.
Pagani Zonda F Clubsport
When compared to the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and Bugatti, Pagani is the baby of the supercar world building its first production cars in 1999. But in that time Pagani has made a hell of an impact with its brilliant looking Zondas.
The Zonda F Clubsport has a 7.3-litre V12 engine which churns out 650bhp. As a result the F CS will accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and 0-124mph in 9.8 seconds. Top speed of 214mph isn’t bad either.
With 380mm Brembo brakes, the Zonda is as good at stopping as it is accelerating, pulling up from 124mph in an amazing 4.4 seconds.
Limited to just 25, Cheltenham supercar dealer Broughtons has number 22 of the production run for sale – for £900,000.
Ferrari Enzo
Launched in 2002, the Enzo is the fastest ever production Ferrari with a top speed of 217mph and lucky owners include Jay Kay, Eric Clapton, Nick Mason and Rod Stewart. It’s most definitely a rock star’s car.
Just 399 of the 660bhp hypercars were built, selling at £418,000 a pop. Bargain. Because if you want to go out and buy an Enzo on Auto Trader you’ll need twice that to get your hands on one today. Auto Trader has one Enzo for sale with Nick Cartwright Specialist Cars. The 2005 model, with 800 miles on the clock, is on the market for £900,000.
It’s an even rarer car than when launched with a fair few written off over the years. Last month, footage emerged of an Enzo on fire, causing massive heartache among supercar fans across the globe. On the plus side, if you have an untarnished Enzo, the price is likely to rise thanks to these unfortunate events.
Porsche Carrera GT
While 300 Veyrons are planned and 399 Enzos built, the Porsche Carrera GT is what some might call a common hypercar with 1,270 built between 2004 and 2006.
As the ultimate Porker, the Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7-litre V10 engine which enables 612 angry horses to spin the rear wheels. As a result, the Porsche will accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and hit 205mph. And they’re lively, just ask Lewis Hamilton’s dad who crashed one into a hedge last year.
It’s not much quicker than the Porsche GT2 but the GT2 looks like any other 911. The Carrera, while sharing some similarities with the legendary range, has its own identity and its own price bracket, costing £330,000 when it was news.
There are two for sale on Auto Trader – a 2004 model with 8,200 miles for £259,995 at Specialist Cars of Malton. A 2005 model with 4,000 miles on the clock is for sale with Individual Cars for £279,950.

Mercedes McLaren SLR 722
The standard McMerc is a special car but the 722 takes it up a notch.
The German-British Mercedes McLaren SLR 722 Edition got its name from the 1955 Mille Miglia endurance race which Stirling Moss and his co-pilot Denis Jenkinson won in a Mercedes 300 SLR after setting off at 7.22am.
Powered by a tuned version of the SLR’s 5.5-litre V8 engine, the 722 Edition produces 650bhp – up from the SLR’s standard 617bhp, enabling 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds (a 0.2 improvement) and top speed of 209mph.
Auto Trader has one Mercedes SLR 722 on the market, offered by Mayfair Prestige for £275,000.
