Car videos: Luxury car special
18 June 2008 Each week we upload tons of great car videos. This week Sir Alan Sugar’s Rolls-Royce Phantom has appeared on our site, this edition of Videos of the Week is all about luxury cars. Everyone has a dream lottery-winning garage featuring Ferrari F40s, McLaren F1s and Bugatti Veyrons. But while it’s great having a two-seat, 200mph+ hypercar, one of the best things about having millions in the bank is the fact you can afford to be driven everywhere. For this you need to be selective about your car – which means it needs to be spacious, luxury, smooth and go quicker than a steroid-pumped 100 metre sprinter. Maybach 57 Wimbledon Village is a super-rich south-west London suburb where the Porsche 911 is more common than the Ford Focus. Driving through ‘the Village’ last week, our man was confronted by an über-car – Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis’ £297,000 Maybach 57. Built by Mercedes, the Maybach 57 is powered by a 6-litre V12 engine producing 612bhp. But while it’s got more power than NATO, the famously acerbic Paphitis bought the German limo to chill out in while on long journeys. Fellow Dragon, 6ft 7 tall Peter Jones also owns one – legroom is one of the Maybach’s big selling points. And even the king of cool, Hollywood star Samuel L Jackson has a Maybach 57. Rolls-Royce Phantom The Apprentice star Sir Alan Sugar’s is well known for his philanthropy, donating large sums of money to the Great Ormond Street children’s hospital. But he also likes to splash his cash on Rolls-Royces – and his old Rolls-Royce Phantom is on Auto Trader for £179,000. View our Rolls-Royce Phantom slide show However, now he’s got rid of his Roller, what will Sir Alan transfer his famous AMS 1 registration plate to? A new Rolls-Royce Phantom of course. And this time he’s opted for the long wheelbase model – which set him back an incredible £313,500. The Phantom is a hugely successful car with other celebrity owners including music mogul Simon Cowell and Hollywood hardman Sylvester Stallone. Maserati Quattroporte For some, the Rolls-Royce and Maybach could be a little bit over the top. But with the Maserati Quattroporte you get Italian styling and performance tied in with four-door practicality. For £85,000 you get a 4.2-litre V8 engine producing a tasty 400bhp and 340lb/ft of pulling power. And unlike the Rolls-Royce and the Maybach – which cost more than three times as much – the Maserati hasn’t got a limited top speed, so will reach 171mph.
