04 April 2008 Andy Goodwin thinks the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe is the ultimate car for the discerning millionaire. The Phantom Coupe has taken the Rolls-Royce Phantom recipe and put the onus back on those who would rather drive than be driven. View more pictures of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe It’s the ultimate two-door coupe and has the extraordinary price tag of £285,000. So what does the Goodwood based company include for this princely sum? The last word in luxury and exclusivity. The interior is hand-built using only the finest quality leather, wood and chrome, and Rolls Royce only plan to build 200 Phantom Coupes each year. A simple elegance is found throughout the cabin, and while technology is abundant, it’s cleverly masked by switches from a more traditional era. An exquisite analogue clock and wooden panel mask a multimedia screen, which is revealed only when called upon and Rolls-Royce call its climate control vent buttons ‘organ stops’. A Lexicon 15-speaker entertainment system with its own amplifier and two sub-woofers, provide aural satisfaction. And it’s easy to relax and enjoy the music while sat on the Phantom Coupe’s rear ‘lounge seat’, looking up at the optional full length starlight headlining as it mimics the night sky using hundreds of tiny fibre optic lights. When the driver depresses the accelerator the reaction from passengers should be similarly impressive, as the 6.75-litre V12 with 453bhp and 531lb/ft of pulling power accelerates the Phantom Coupe from 0-60mph in just 5.6 seconds. Even more awe-inspiring is the trademark Rolls-Royce ‘power reserve gauge’, which lets the driver know he still has 90 per cent of power to call upon – while travelling at 100mph. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe has been tuned to corner more sportily than the saloon and has stiffened suspension and a stiffer body, painstakingly constructed from aluminium and then hand-welded together by engineering experts. The exterior of the car has a softer appearance than its saloon brother, thanks to its sweeping coupe roofline, but still commands respect. The Phantom Coupe is a huge car, rolling on 21-inch wheels and with its unmissable Rolls-Royce grille, with a Spirit of Ecstasy statuette rising up from its peak. Its long doors are hinged at the rear, allowing more graceful entries and exits by its occupants and opening and closing electrically at the touch of a button. And if you’re worried about seeing another Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe on the road, despite its exclusivity, you can choose from one of 44,000 possible paint colours available over the standard hues – applied and hand polished to give an unrivalled depth and finish. |
