The trusty Land Rover is the ultimate no-frills, go anywhere vehicle; it's virtually indestructible and there's not much terrain that it can't cross.

But what happens when you want a bit more oomph and bundles of bling?

Stuart Milne says the Merc G55 has the answer.

On the face of it, the G55 is a pretty dull looking machine; designed on an Etch-a-Sketch, the only curves are the wheels.

But that's the appeal. It's a sort of anti-hero - you shouldn't like it, but you can't help but warm to its no-nonsense ruggedness.

The fact that the G55 has AMG's 5.5-litre, supercharged V8 delivering a 476bhp kick up the bottom helps too. Oh, and 515lb/ft of torque, which is enough to pull a small island.

On the road, you'll pass 60mph from a standstill in 5.6 seconds.
Sadly, its limited to 'just' 130mph, because go any faster and the tyres will explode.

And that means, the G55's out of this world performance will plant you firmly in the next.

Going fast in the G55 defeats the object of owning one and anyway - you want to be seen in the Merc's full glory, not as a blur.

American rappers, P Diddy and Jay Z both have one, and it shouldn't be a surprise that our very own David Beckham used to own one.

So it goes fast, and the celebs love it. What else?

At £120,000 new, it's expensive, but unlike a diamond encrusted Rolex, doesn't look tacky or ostentatious?unless you want it too.

There's plenty of bling potential, and big audio systems and even bigger chrome wheels are the modifications of choice, but they take away a lot of its appeal.

Apart from the hot-rod soundtrack booming from the chromed, side-exit exhaust pipes, you'd be hard pressed to spot a G55 from the common-or-garden G-Wagen.

Because sometimes anonymity is exactly what you need.

So if a G hits the spot, have a look to see what's on offer.
