09 February 2006 So sit back, grab a cup of tea and find out why the Porsche Carrera GT knocks the Ferrari Enzo into a cocked hat. I respect the Ferrari Enzo enormously; after all it is a £418,000, 218mph carbon fibre cruise missile. But love it? No. For me a supercar must look like a curvy, sexy supermodel. Like a Porsche Carrera GT. Unlike the slab-sided Enzo - which, if I'm honest, looks like a full sized scalextrix car that's been styled with a brick - the Carrera GT is a PhD in style and restraint. Sure, within the lines there is pure, naked aggression, but it just looks so right. The front pays homage to its first outright winner at Le Mans, the 917 and the rest of the car simply exudes Porscheness. The German marque put everything it learned over the last 58 years into the GT. The saints from Stuttgart simply say: "Over 23,000 racing victories. Expressed in a single car". But far from being a race car with number plates, the GT is not a car of compromises. The interior is a wonderful place to be, and refreshingly you'll be hard pressed to find any hand-me-downs from other models. Are you listening Aston? It's a masterclass in sports car minimalism; with lashings of carbon fibre, magnesium and aluminium alongside equipment that wouldn't be out of place on a high-end luxury car. Unusually for a supercar, you'll find sat-nav and a Bose audio system, should you want to drown out its V10 orchestra? Hearing a GT for the first time is one of those defining automotive moments, like getting your first car, or the first time you crack a ton on the, erm, autobahn. It sounds like it's about to suck the whole world through its intakes, chew it up and spit it out of its exhaust. Give a GT some beans and it's a case of buckle up, shut up and hold on. The 5.7-litre V10 knocks out 605bhp, which means it's good for a 3.8 second 0-60mph dash and 205mph top whack. Of course, carrying a featherweight 1,380kgs helps - that's only a bit more than the anorexic Elise. You'll pay between £225-300,000 for a GT, but someone else would have already lost that in depreciation. Have a look to see what's on offer. So, forget national stereotypes, if you want a sexy supercar with passion and emotion, skip the Italians; because the Germans have it in spades. |
