07 March 2008

Welcome to The Weird World of Wheels, our weekly round-up of the strangest car-related news from around the world.

This week, Adrian Hearn brings you all the weird and wacky cars from the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

Geneva Motor Show 2008 features

Supercars | Green cars | The big round-up | New Bugatti Veyron |  Car of Geneva | City cars

Nissan GT-R cut in half

The Nissan GT-R is the supercar of the moment. With a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre V8, the Nissan GT-R accelerates from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds before hitting 195mph.

It’s Porsche 911 Turbo performance for BMW M3 money – when the Nissan GT-R goes on sale next year it will cost just £52,000.

Nissan bought a couple of GT-Rs along to Geneva for its European debut – including this one which had been skillfully cut in half.

Nissan Pivo

Another Nissan, but the Pivo is a different beast entirely to the 195mph GT-R.

The battery-powered three-seat Pivo is unique in-so-far as it rotates 360 degrees so you can drive straight into a parking place, banishing reversing worries for ever.

If only Maureen from Driving School had one of these.

Jeep Renegade concept

Ten years ago you’d imagine Action Man’s car of choice would be a gigantic Hummer.

These days the emphasis is on eco-friendliness, and if Action Man were to choose a vehicle now, he’d choose this – the Jeep Renegade.

The two seat Jeep Renegade concept has a lithium-ion battery back and a diesel engine which should manage a kaki-green 110mpg.

Giant Fiat 500

It’s probably the largest Fiat 500 you’ll ever see.

However, there’s no engine, seats or gear-stick inside this monster machine, but a Playboy mansion-like atmosphere with funky lights, seats and stunning models.

It seemed only polite to stay.

Rinspeed sQuba

We were amazed when we first read about the Rinspeed sQuba, a Swiss-built Lotus lookalike, which can be driven under water.

Convinced someone was pulling our leg, we were extremely pleased when we saw the £750,000 concept on display.

Gumpert Apollo

With a wacky name, even more extreme design and 650bhp, the Gumpert Apollo is a seriously mad car – and it really exists.

If you’ve got £215,000 you can walk into a dealership and purchase one of these 224mph machines and know one thing – you’ve bought a proper supercar.
