31 August 2007

Each week, we bring you the strangest auto-related news from around the world. This week:

Ooops! I did it again

Rarely a week goes by when Britney Spears doesn’t get into some sort of scrape with her Mercedes CLK.

A few weeks back the US songstress scratched her motor while parking in front of a pack of photographers.

This week Ms Spears forgot to fill her car with enough petrol in Beverley Hills, and ended up with four obliging police officers pushing her car to the nearest car park.

As if that wasn’t bad (and embarrassing) enough, the 25-year-old had a parking ticket slapped on her car while out shopping later the same day.

It’s great when you’re skate

The new Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet gets from 0-62mph in four seconds. Pretty good.

Imagine riding a skateboard from 0-110mph in just over two seconds.

That’s exactly what 27-year-old Joel King did this week, setting the new skateboard world land-speed record.

The IT worker used a specially-built £7,000 jet-powered board to beat the record on a disused airbase in Suffolk.

Mr King said: “I was pretty confident about doing it, but I didn’t want to have a Richard Hammond moment; at those sorts of speeds, just a few inches off the ground, there’s not much room for error if anything goes wrong.”

Huge animal Hummer

As far as global warming is concerned, cars have had a pretty bad press.

But it seems the focus of global activists is switching to another culprit.

A report by the UN concluded raising animals for food creates more greenhouse gases than cars, trucks, planes and ships combined.

In order to draw attention to the greenhouse gases produced by the livestock business People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are planning to park a Hummer, driven by a man in a chicken suit, outside a Whitehouse-sponsored forum in Washington.

Weird Pic of the Week: Hot wheels

Thanks to Guy Stansfield, who spotted this red hot caravan at Tebay Services on the M6.
