The Weird World of Wheels: Top Gear Special

The Weird World of Wheels: Top Gear Special - Feature Image

26 January 2007

Top Gear is back on our screens on Sunday 28th January - to celebrate we've rounded up some of the strangest moments from the show's history, and a video of outtakes from the show.

Timber!

You might not think Jeremy Clarkson is a fan of trees, but there's a line.

While filming a piece for the show in 2004, Clarkson rammed a Toyota Hilux into a 30-year-old chestnut tree in Bristol.

Why? To test how rugged it was of course.

Turned out it was tough enough to cause significant damage to the tree.

The local parish council thought the damage had been caused by vandals.

Until they watched BBC2 one Sunday night.

Amazing brakes

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is an amazing car. With amazing brakes.

"The way is gathers speed is nothing compared to the way it loses it," said Clarkson on the show.

To show off this fact, Jeremy Clarkson braked down from 120mph in 240ft, stopping just short of a line of cones.

The demonstration is impressive, but what you didn’t see on the show was the first few attempts where the car slammed through the cones like a bowling ball.

Ouch.

Handy

The task was easy.

Each presenter had to drive a car into a wall at 30mph.

Only trouble was, Jeremy Clarkson had to judge the speed for himself, as the speedometer in his Volvo was broken.

As was his hand, after crashing into the concrete wall at 40mph.

Video: Top Gear bloopers

Here's a compilation of some of the best mistakes from the show.
