The Weird World of Wheels: 19th May 2006
19 May 2006 WELCOME to Alex Eckford's Weird World of Wheels. Each week, we'll be bringing you the essential strangest motoring news from around the world. Don't forget to come back every Friday for your new helping. This week: Donut record smashed If I was to say the world donuts record had been smashed, you might think I was talking about Homer Simpson munching his way through boxes of glazed sugar rings. But the donuts I'm talking about are the motoring kind. The round-and-round, tyre-smoking manoeuvre, car never pointing in the direction of travel kind of donut. The world record for the number of cars performing simultaneous donuts has gone from a measly three to a far more impressive 22. Taking place at the Santa Pod Raceway in Northhamptonshire, the record attempt was organised by Redline magazine and Cooper Tires. To beat the record, all 22 cars had to be spinning for at least ten seconds. Mmmmm, donuts. Drug driving Driving while on drugs is a very bad idea. The problem for the police is catching those driving while under the influence of illegal substances. But one driver made the police's job a lot easier by driving at 6mph along the A4 in Holland. A passing officer pulled onto the hard shoulder, got out of his car, followed the suspiciously slow motorist on foot, and jumped into the passenger seat of the car. The 36-year-old driver was taken to a local police station, and was found to be under the influence of drugs. As a punishment he had his licence confiscated for 12 hours. Probably a good idea to lock up the station's supply of Jaffa Cakes. Eau de Norfolk The next time someone tells you you smell like a car, don't be offended. Lotus cars' eponymous fragrance was launched in the US with a swanky party at Manhattan Motors in New York. The man behind the idea, Michael Albert said: "Lotus is such an exclusive niche brand, and this is how I see the fragrance as well. It gives you a feeling of driving through the Mediterranean in an Elise - the open top of the car, the smell of the fresh flowers and the water." Reports that the Norfolk-based manufacturer's scent is "bootiful" are unconfirmed.
