24 October 2006 Multiple Formula One champion Michael Schumacher retired this weekend after an incredible 16 years at the top level of motor sport. He rewrote almost every Formula One record in the book: Most championships (seven), most wins (91), most pole positions (68), most fastest laps (76) and most championship points (1,369). But this litany of remarkable statistics will forever be tainted by the controversial way he achieved some of them - particularly the collisions with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve in 1994 and 1997. Earlier this year he was at the centre of an outrage once again when he was thrown to the back of the grid at Monaco for blocking the track during qualifying. Take a look back now on his colourful and contentious career. Click here to launch our EXCLUSIVE Michael Schumacher slide show. Auto Trader links Trackside - the king is dead. Long live the king |
