Lewis Hamilton loses F1 title - twice
22 October 2007 But Britain’s new F1 hero may yet take the championship from Kimi Raikkonen after an appeal against the results of yesterday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Trackside’s Keith Collantine explains yet another controversial twist in the 2007 Formula 1 season. The court of appeal may decide this year’s championship after McLaren appealed against three cars which finished ahead of the Briton in yesterday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg’s Williams and the BMWs of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld were found to have used fuel which was below the regulation temperature during the race. Fuel temperature is regulated to stop teams super-chilling it in order to fit more into the cars. Hamilton finished yesterday’s race third behind Rosberg, Kubica and Heidfeld. Were any two of them excluded from the results, and Hamilton moved up to at least fifth, he would become champion. Kimi Raikkonen won yesterday’s Grand Prix and, with Hamilton seventh, took the championship. Team mate Felipe Massa was second and Fernando Alonso third. Hamilton had to fight back from two early setbacks. He ran wide on the first lap, falling from second to eighth. He’d battled back to sixth when his car temporarily cut out with a gearbox fault. That left him 18th and seemingly out of the hunt for the title. But as he fought back through the pack it fleetingly look as though he might salvage the crucial fifth place he needed to win the championship. Despite a string of impressive passing moves he fell short of his goal by ten seconds. Will he now be champion in the courtroom?
