Fun in the sun

02 May 2008

Brits might have to put up with some of the most unpredictable weather in Europe, but we buy more convertibles than anywhere on the continent.

Stuart Milne and Andy Goodwin bring you six of the best drop-tops for fun in the sun.

Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 is one of the few cars to leave every driver smitten. It looks great and if you get the 2-litre version, pretty fast too. But its real trump card is the way it drives – its handling is sensational, and will embarrass cars costing five times as much. The Roadster Coupe is the one to go for – its clever folding hardtop means it's quieter than the soft-top and only weighs a little more, meaning its excellent driving poise is retained.

Volkswagen Eos

It might look part Golf, part Passat, but the Eos is the most stylish – albeit understated – model in Volkswagen's current range. More engines are available than the Astra and Focus, including the lusty 3.2-litre V6 from the Golf R32. It's certainly the coupe-convertible for the shrinking violets among us.

BMW Z4

You know you like a car’s looks when you get out, take a look back, walk away, and take another look. The BMW Z4 is one of those cars. It combines classic roadster looks with contemporary angles to create a very good-looking car. We drove the 150bhp 2-litre model which boasts a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. However, there is plenty more fun to be had in a model range which also includes a choice of 177bhp and 218bhp 2.5-litre models, a 265bhp 3-litre model and 343bhp performance M model

Honda S2000

Built in 1999 to celebrate 50 years of Honda, the spec-sheet of the Honda S2000 reads like a sportscar purist’s dream – rear-wheel-drive, lightweight construction and excellent mechanics. With outstanding reliability, handsome looks, a well-finished interior and excellent handling, the Honda S2000 is one of the best sports cars for the money.

Vauxhall Tigra

The Tigra is a rare breed of teeny drop-tops that manage to be fairly practical and fun. Its cheeky demeanour means it can tread where others can't in urban areas and shuns cutesy, curvy looks for a real angular treat. The range starts at £13,750 – about the same as a Ford StreetKa – and rises to almost £17,000. The range topper's prices only fall short of the excellent Mazda MX-5 by a little, which would be the top choice for keen drivers.

Mercedes SL

Mercedes have taken top-end luxury motoring up another notch with the SL. The Mercedes SL has a five model range: The six cylinder SL 350, eight cylinder SL 500 and 12 cylinder SL 600 along with the performance eight cylinder SL63 AMG (a new addition to the line-up) and 12 cylinder SL 65 AMG. In driving terms this simply means there is a large reserve of easily-accessed power there when you need it making swift acceleration for overtaking manoeuvres simple.
