Champions League final: the race to Moscow

Champions League final: the race to Moscow - News image

20 May 2008

The biggest ever game between two English clubs takes place this Wednesday as Manchester United face Chelsea in the Champions League final – in Moscow.

We recently showed you which team has the best cars, but what would happen if each individual player raced each other from their respective grounds? Who would get to Moscow first? Andy Goodwin finds out.

1st – Claude Makelele (Chelsea)
Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR
8.5 hours - 208mph

Claude Makelele has romped home in first place and lifted the cup in our virtual race.

His Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR supercar has the highest top speed of any of our competitors – an incredible 208mph.

If he could maintain this speed all the way to the Luzhniki Stadium he’d arrive just eight and a half hours after leaving London.

2nd - Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
Aston Martin Vanquish
8.9 hours – 200mph

Frank Lampard is the first Brit to arrive, and in a British car too – the Aston Martin Vanquish S. It’s the fastest Aston Martin model ever sold, with a top speed of 200mph.

Even after travelling 1,171 miles from London in under nine hours, Lampard might still be in the mood for playing football thanks to its cocooning leather seats.

3rd - John Terry (Chelsea)
Ferrari F430
9 hours – 196mph

John Terry pulls up next, making it a one-two-three for Chelsea (thanks in part to their 209 mile geographical head-start).

His Ferrari F430 has 483bhp, giving it a top speed of 196mph and making it faster than a helicopter.

4th - Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea)
Porsche 911 Turbo
9.2 hours – 192mph

Shevchenko’s Porsche 911 Turbo might only be 16mph slower than Makelele’s Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR, but he arrives more than half an hour later after covering such a huge distance.

And the £100k Porsche 911 Turbo is around a third of the price of the Mercedes.

5th - Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Mercedes CLK DTM
9.9 hours – 199mph

Wayne Rooney arrives to spoil the Chelsea party in less than ten hours. Along the way he has overtaken Chelsea players Drogba and Ballack, closing down their head start from London.

Bounding along at 199mph in his Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM, Rooney would be travelling around 50mph faster than the Chelsea players.

6th - Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Bentley Continental GT
10 hours – 198mph

Backing Rooney all the way is Ryan Giggs. Travelling just 1mph slower at 198mph in his Bentley Continental GT he arrives just minutes later.

He will be more rested than Wayne thanks to Crewe’s fine work making the Bentley Continental GT a comfy cruiser, rather than a stripped out racer.

7th - Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
Audi R8
10.6 hours – 187mph

Cristiano Ronaldo has a Bugatti Veyron on order, and would have won this competition for Manchester United had it arrived in time.

With a top speed of 253mph he would have passed all his Chelsea opposition - despite their 200 mile head start – and arrived in 7.8 hours.

His Audi R8 supercar is fast too, cruising at 187mph in our fantasy race and arriving in Moscow two hours after Makelele.

8th - Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United)
Bentley Arnage
11.1 hours – 179mph

The player least likely to have a headache after flat-out driving for hour after hour in their sports cars is Rio Ferdinand.

His Bentley Arnage has a silky smooth ride and a whisper quiet engine. After setting the cruise control he can take off his shoes and relax his feet into the luxury carpet, keeping them fresh for the big match.

9th - Didier Drogba (Chelsea)
Mercedes SL65 AMG
11.4 hours – 155mph

But Didier Drogba is crying foul play. His Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG has a speed limiter fitted at the factory to ensure it never passes 155mph.

It might be a sensible feature, but damages his performance in this challenge by reigning in the power of the SL’s mighty V8 engine.

10th - Michael Ballack (Chelsea)
Audi Q7
11.5 hours - 154mph

It’s hardly surprising Drogba would be upset, after struggling for hours to shake off Ballack in his obscenely fast 154mph Audi Q7 four-wheel-drive.

The Audi Q7 might be the biggest and heaviest car in this race, but it’s a sports-car-quick SUV thanks to a whopping 345bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine.

11th - Gary Neville (Manchester United)
Range Rover Sport
14 hours – 140mph

As Garry Neville pulls into Moscow, Makelele has finished celebrating his victory.

Neville’s Range Rover Sport has a mighty impressive 140mph top speed, but it can’t compete with the sports car competition – let alone the host of supercars in this race.
