21 November 2007

Welcome to Adrian Hearn’s Car Videos of the Week.

We’ve been trawling the web for some classic motoring clips, from the funny to the plain unbelievable.

This is what we found…

The Volkswagen Nardo W12

Earlier this year Volkswagen unveiled the positively loony Golf W12. With a rear-mounted six-litre W12 engine the Golf produced 600bhp and had a top speed of 202mph.

But as Jeremy Clarkson proved on Top Gear, the epic power meant devastating pace but hellish cornering. It only lapped the show’s track 0.8 seconds quicker than a standard Golf R32.

However, six years earlier Volkswagen built the Volkswagen W12 Coupe or ‘Nardo’ as it became known.

With 600bhp and weighing just 1,200kg the W12 Coupe accelerated from 0-62mph (100kph) in 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 217mph.

Volkswagen took the W12 to the legendary Nardo high-speed bowl in November 2002, where they lapped the eight mile ring non-stop for 24 hours, racking up a world record 4,804 miles at an average speed of 200.2mph.

Check out this promo video of the awesome concept which sadly never reached production.

Lamborghini Murcielago racing round Nardo at night

The Lamborghini Murcielago also went round the Nardo bowl in 2002 setting its own records for a production car.

With a 6.2-litre engine producing 580bhp and accelerating from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds it’s one of the world’s most exotic supercars.

From a standing start, the Lamborghini Murcielago – driven by 26-year-old test driver Giorgio Sanna – drove 189 miles in one hour (including a fuel stop).

Watch the build-up before Giorgio unleashes the Lambo’s awesome performance now.

The RUF Yellowbird

The former world’s fastest car is for sale on Auto Trader.

Back in 1989, the RUF CTR Yellowbird smashed the Ferrari F40’s 201mph record, when it hit 211mph.

A used Ferrari F40 will set you back more than £200,000 – we’ve got one of just 20 Porsche 911s converted by RUF into CTR Yellowbirds in the world for £89,995.

In the same year as taking the F40’s mantle as the world’s fastest car, the RUF CTR Yellowbird also set the a production car lap record of the daunting Nürburgring when it managed the 13.6 mile track in eight minutes 22 seconds.

Watch the 469bhp brute in action.
