|
04 October 2006 Published by BBC Books ISBN 0563493623 Price: £9.99 Hardback In a nutshell: A comic collection of quirky stories from the car world, ‘Top Gear: Motor Mania’ explores motoring mayhem and comical car incidents. From cooking with roadkill to Austin Maestros doing 480mph, the book is hive of humour. Who wants it? It’s not just a book for Top Gear lovers and petrolheads. Motor Mania will appeal to people of all ages who want a quick, light-hearted read. Stats entertainment? A bit short of banter down the pub? Simply reel off stat after stat and surprise your friends with your wealth of useless knowledge. Nice pictures? There are 50 photos - but they’re only in black and white. Killer fact: Jussi Solonoja, the ‘sausage king’ of Finland holds the record speeding fine. In 2004, the millionaire was nabbed doing 50mph in a 25mph zone and was fined £116,000. The Finnish fining system revolves around the person’s income – Solonoja earns £7 million a year. But it’s not just facts; Motor Mania is crammed with amusing anecdotes and embarrassing excuses for being caught speeding: “I passed out after seeing UFOs.” Essential rating: 7/10. It’s a great bathroom read, but a few more pictures would make it even better. Review by Adrian Hearn |
