Hatton v Mayweather is the most anticipated fight in boxing history

07 December 2007

Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton takes on Floyd ‘Pretty Boy’ Mayweather on Saturday night in one of the most anticipated boxing matches in history.

And driving the champion boxers through their knockout careers are some of the world's most desirable motors.

Vijay Pattni rounds up the boxers’ knockout rides.

Ricky Hatton

‘The Hitman’ faces his toughest challenge yet – in the form of 147lb, super welterweight champion of the world, Floyd Mayweather.

Humble Hatton, who hails from Manchester, is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, and has an impressive record of 43 straight wins – and no losses.

And his choice of car is equally gargantuan. Ricky was the owner of a BMW X5 – a two-tonne Bavarian beast.

Ricky also owns a three-wheeled Reliant Regal from Only Fools and Horses fame.

Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather Jr is the current super welterweight champion.

Ring Magazine has rated the Michigan-born Mayweather as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, with a fight record of 38 wins – with 24 knockouts.

And Mayweather likes to splash out on his cars – sitting in his collection of automotive exotica is a Ferrari 360 and a Rolls Royce Phantom.

The 30-year-old said: “You don’t drive a Rolls Royce – you get driven in one.”

And here is a round up of other British boxers’ cars:

Joe Calzaghe

Welshman Calzaghe has never lost a professional bout, racking up a massive 44 wins and has held on to the WBO super middleweight title he took from Chris Eubank for ten years.

Calzaghe – also ranked in Ring Magazine’s top ten pound-for-pound fighters, sold his Mercedes SL350 to concentrate on the Kessler bout, and used to own a BMW M3 – both of which were sold through Auto Trader.

Chris Eubank

Eubank is another of Britain’s famous boxers – a powerful fighter, he has held the WBO Middleweight and Super Middleweight titles.

Outside the ring, his eccentricities have caused a stir, including dressing up in jodhpurs and appointing himself Lord of the Manor of Brighton.

His automotive excesses are equally unique – he once owned a Hummer H2 and an American Peterbilt 379 truck cab.

Frank Bruno

The loveable Frank Bruno is probably the nation’s most endearing pugilist, and shot to glory when in 1995, he defeated Oliver McCall over 12 rounds to be crowned the heavyweight champion.

And although his championship reign didn’t last (he was beaten by Mike Tyson) – his choice of car certainly would – a heavyweight BMW X5 packing a 4.4-litre V8 punch.

Lennox Lewis

Once the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Lennox Lewis is now a boxing commentator on US network HBO.

But his career has seen him take on the world’s very best fighters – including the infamous 2002 long-awaited showdown with Mike Tyson.

Shunning the usual German regulars, Lewis instead opted for a touch of British class, once owning a luxurious Bentley Azure Mulliner (which was for sale on Auto Trader), and the exclusive Aston Martin Virage.
