Auto Talk: Auto Trader TV show presenters
11 October 2006 Alex Eckford went to meet Mike and Edd, and found out what it's like to work on the show, and what's coming up in the brand new series. When I meet Mike and Edd, the larger than life presenters of the Auto Trader TV show, they're slumped on a sofa, recovering from a promotional duties to get the word out about the show. "We've done ten interviews today," says Mike, sipping a cup of coffee. Sensing their fatigue, I jump straight in by asking Mike to sum up the idea behind the show. "In a nutshell the show is our one-stop car shop - a solution for everyone looking to buy and sell cars. We want to help people who are having trouble shifting their motors - give them common sense advice on how to get the best deal," says Mike. Even though he's been working all day, Mike is full of energy, a larger than life character as always. Mike and Edd have been working as co-presenters for four years. As presenters of 'Wheeler Dealers' on Discovery Real Time, the dynamic duo have created a perfect on-screen partnership. Mike is the salesman, while Edd takes on the mechanical duties, fixing seller's cars to give them the best possible chance of being sold. Aside from his TV presenting, six foot seven mechanical master Edd is best known for creating outlandish vehicles - including a motorised sofa.
Each show in the 15-week series has its own theme - from family cars to 4x4s. "Every show has something for everyone in it. I'd be amazed if everyone who watches the show doesn't come away with something - they'll be better equipped to buy and sell motors," says Mike. "It's great when we get results - I've lost count of the number of calls I've received from people who've sold within days of us helping them," says Mike. But there is a flipside. "It's frustrating when people don’t take the advice they're given onboard. In one case we saw a BMW at the side of the road with a for sale sign in the window. We called the guy up, got him to bring the car in. The front panels were completely rusted so Edd fixed them up, made the car look like new. The guy took the car away and parked it back exactly where it was - where it remains to this day," says Mike.

"I drove it to Cannes once. It was brilliant. The steering wheel is a pizza pan - I'd leave the sofa/car parked on the road, and when I came back the pan would be full of money. People thought it was for charity! I drove all the way across France and didn't pay a penny," says Edd.
Spending time with Mike and Edd is a pleasure - an hour passes and I don’t even notice. They're full of anecdotes and one-liners (I have to switch the Dictaphone off at one point in fear of recording libel). If the rest of the series is as entertaining as they are, they've got a massive hit on their hands.Page 1
